Canvas

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA) led a public engagement process called Canvas from July to September 2014. Over 300 people provided their ideas and comments during Canvas for the future use of the red zone land in Kaiapoi, Pines Beach and Kairaki. You can read more in the Canvas Summary Report (released in December 2014).

Here are the comments that were received during Canvas:

I would like to see all the red zones used well and flourishing with many different types of things such as community gardens OR gardens run by the government raising fruit and vegetables to give out to the community and especially those who are struggling to get food or with finance and buying food...especially since fruit and vegetables tend to be pretty expensive. These gardens/organizations could be set up in large tents. I myself know of a church that uses a large tent each sunday as of the damage to their building. These could be set up and have food org. inside. They could put things like a park on these spaces or things like basketball/tennis courts or even just park benches. I would like to see a community flowing and flourishing one that reflects life, not negative thoughts such as how much damage the earthquake did. I think this could be very beneficial to the economy e.g we could certain amounts of money each year. These community/govt run gardens could be like food banks.

In New Zealand as a whole, including Cantebury, significant and continuing large areas of land with top grade soils have been taken over for suburbs, motorways, etc. This land has been lost to food production. This is because reversal of subdivision and removal of underground services, would be prohibitively expensive; compensation would have to paid too. Return most redzones to farming, horticulture, and
forestry, including private enterprise. Sale of land would help council's finances.

Ideas from 13 August Community Workshop:

* A walking/cycling bridge from NE Kaiapoi to Courtenay
* All trees/shrubs should be left where they are until all houses are gone. Kaiapoi has a group of very knowledgeable home gardeners who would nurture these trees/shrubs without the expense of an arborist.
* Working farms for schools etc to visit
* Park and rides
* A viewing hill with flying fox and mud slide and luge
* Food forest
* Sculpture parks
* Bike tracks

Courtenay Downs - stop bank walkway to Maori Damn
This is the best vantage point to view:
1. Aquatic life on the river
2. The lake at NCF Reserve and Banks Peninsula
3. The mountains to the West.
4. This is a popular walkway to follow river activity such as the moving 'Tuhoi'

Riverside of the walkway - low growing native plants to waters edge, clear patches of bank defininf that edge for safety and habitat enhancement. Taller plantings at least in groves of natives to bring bird life onto this side of the river in greater numbers.

I would like to see trees, native and fruit, recreation area, somewhere for people to have a picnic and say "my house was here" a few years ago! Maybe a community centre - meeting place.

We already have a community centre! A dedicated sports stadium would be good but maybe it could be developed at the high school like at rangiora high school. Building on red zone land would be expensive so natural things would be best. If land was to be fixed and built on I would pick beside the library and extend the town that way. To make the most of the river! Make the buildings two story like the library.

A sculpture park along the stretch of land between Charles St and the riverbank extending east beyond the Post Office combined with walking and bike trails. More parking areas for shoppers e.g. Raven Quay/Black St/Hilton St red zone. The opportunity for people to rebuild on the red zone, with appropriate foundations if required. Parkland and/or reserve areas next to the green zones suitably planted to provide a pleasant outlook for those still living in the green zone. An outdoor theatre space to be used by the community for social gatherings. A BMX track. A network of walking, biking and riding trails.Trees planted to shelter the area from the easterly and to provide a McLeans Island type environment for outdoor activities. A place where people want to stay, visit and enjoy their surroundings.A place that reflects the history of Kaiapoi and shows its unique identity. Jackie
