Canvas

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA) led a public engagement process called Canvas from July to September 2014. Over 300 people provided their ideas and comments during Canvas for the future use of the red zone land in Kaiapoi, Pines Beach and Kairaki. You can read more in the Canvas Summary Report (released in December 2014).

Here are the comments that were received during Canvas:

Kaiapoi

1. Extend carpark behind the new library and shops between Hilton St and Raven Quay to as far as Flo. Barnard Courts to cater for future growth.
2. BMX track at end of Hilton St between Parish Lane and the NCF Reserve with parking to service track, park and those using the walking track.
3. A good dog park like Rolleston has.
4. Create a new golf course in Golden Groves area which could be exchanged for existing Golf Course which is on better land and could be used for future growth of Kaiapoi hence getting a return for Govt.

Reserves, walkways, cycleways, club activity areas, nature and farming.
I do concede these changes have a major cost. As a rate and tax payer I think it will be worth the progress.

Needs to stay green.

Kaiapoi

Turn Brookland into "Leisure Park"
within the park, mini golf, cycle track, health camp, concert area, running track, train, bmx track, accommodation etc
look at "Disney" park

Ideas from 13 August Community Workshop:

* Grass and trees
* Birds and bees
* Cyclepaths /walk ways
* No rubbish dumping
* Clean up Courteney Lake similar to Pegasus Lake
* Save the Cherry trees 10 Dawson Douglas Place
* Areas for the kids

Kaiapoi

Parks, sports grounds, walking tracks, dog park.
All kept neat and tidy.
Park over park for freedom campers.

no to parasite(freedom) campers

Kaiapoi

I want to see the rowing/boat club used more often! Paddling round and around in a circle at Pegasus is getting quite…. boring.

I would like the Kaiapoi river to be cleaned up , more planting along side river bank where necessary, to enhance
area, making it more inviting for people to use small boats also, ie: kayaks / canoes too.

The land should be made into green areas, with parks, trees, thracks and picnic areas.
They should be available for everyone to use, walkers, dog walkers, bikes etc.

Kaiapoi

Horse trails and wquestrian area- further thought: make sure there are trails suitable for carriage driving enthusiasts

Kaiapoi

Walkways, maraes - cultural meeting places, dog park, fitness areas - outside, skate park, bmx par, community gardens, burn out pads for young drivers - fenced away from houses, childrens play areas, golf practice range, art displays, fruit gardens - community , community halls, gyms

Kaiapoi

Fully fenced dog park with trees and bench seat maybe in the Courtney Drive reserve area.

Thinking of the growing population of young people in the area, I believe something constructive that would positively occupy them - perhaps a well maintained skatepark, toilets with planting and pleasing walkways and/or dog park/agility course.

A chinese garden

Multicultural might be the trick

I would like to see native trees and vegetation flourishing and the return of some native birds.

Kaiapoi

A park like Hagley Park. Paths, trees, playground, sculptures, pond, play pool for children, flying fox, train ride (mini), fitness stops like in Hagley Park, trees, plants, flowers, skate park, dog park, auditorium for music, atrium.

I would like to see all the red zones used well and flourishing with many different types of things such as community gardens OR gardens run by the government raising fruit and vegetables to give out to the community and especially those who are struggling to get food or with finance and buying food...especially since fruit and vegetables tend to be pretty expensive. These gardens/organizations could be set up in large tents. I myself know of a church that uses a large tent each sunday as of the damage to their building. These could be set up and have food org. inside. They could put things like a park on these spaces or things like basketball/tennis courts or even just park benches. I would like to see a community flowing and flourishing one that reflects life, not negative thoughts such as how much damage the earthquake did. I think this could be very beneficial to the economy e.g we could certain amounts of money each year. These community/govt run gardens could be like food banks.

In New Zealand as a whole, including Cantebury, significant and continuing large areas of land with top grade soils have been taken over for suburbs, motorways, etc. This land has been lost to food production. This is because reversal of subdivision and removal of underground services, would be prohibitively expensive; compensation would have to paid too. Return most redzones to farming, horticulture, and
forestry, including private enterprise. Sale of land would help council's finances.

People walking through fruit trees

Kaiapoi

I'd love to see a big, green space specifically for families to gather for picnics/BBQs/playground. An interesting space like McLeans Island/Bottle Lake Forest where people can walk and bike - and if you plant the trees now they'll start maturing soon enough. This is a place I would spend a lot of time.

This would be great!

Yeah, like a biking track link? It could be worked into the Waimakariri River Regional Park biking trail - connecting the two? (No idea of logistics, just a thought)

This is a great idea ... i love Spencer Park ... that could be extended through to this area?
