Canvas
The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA) led a public engagement process called Canvas from July to September 2014. Over 300 people provided their ideas and comments during Canvas for the future use of the red zone land in Kaiapoi, Pines Beach and Kairaki. You can read more in the Canvas Summary Report (released in December 2014).

East Kaiapoi / Kairaki
I would like to see the existing specimen trees retained and the whole area planted in New Zealand Native Forest trees and plantings with picnic areas, walkways, and cycle ways etc, similar to that of Bottle Lake Forest.
There may come a time when the Bottle Lake Pine Plantation will be harvested and a "New Kaiapoi Native Forest" could provide for the activities currently being carried out there.
Advantages I see include;
- Reduced maintenance and therefore less tax burden on ratepayers.
- An opportunity to reintroduce native birds such as Bell Birds and Tui.
- An additional attraction for the Kairaki Motor Camp.
- An opportunity to include wet lands and breading grounds for wading birds and migratory fish (whitebait etc.).
- An opportunity to return the area to the native forest and wetland it once was.

Park like native reserves, locals and future generations can enjoy. Get native birds back, get rid of the stoats and possums.

We need a lot of things for a lot of people, but Kaiapoi needs a skateboarding park for the kids and teenagers. The one opposite NW was bowled down and bulldozed flat on 5/9/2010 and me and my son were skating on it the day of the quake 4/9/2010. I thought it was very wrong that recently there was a piece in the Northern Outlook that said there was not going to be a skate or BMX park. That is just outrageous. The kids need a park and a BMX track. Thanks

Hilton street/Raven Quay east of the main road - expand the car park area with short term parking only near the shops, with a second car park further east for all day parking (this could be used by shop staff and bus users)
In the large area on the north side of the river - should only be used for passive use, non commercial such as walking and cycling tracks, as the area is so big most of it should be planted in forest (like bottle lake area) or used as grazing for farmers.
Nearby green zone residents DO NOT want any noise generating activities of any type.
The most important thing to keep in mind is that the land belongs to the Government, so the Government should pay the costs of whatever is done. No ratepayer/council money should be used due to the Government ownership of the land as the Government DOES NOT PAY ANY RATES TO THE COUNCIL!!!!) for any properties its owns anywhere in NZ.
Thanks very much for your suggestions. Just one point we need to correct – the Government does pay full rates on the red zone properties it owns.

The red zones are no longer possibly suitable for large infrastructure, but a bmx track would be a great concept to bring people to the area & have it be useful & fun!
Access to the river for boaties down Cass street would also be handy.

Ideas from 11 August Community Workshop:
* Recreational areas - walkways, playgrounds, cycle track, fishing areas, picnic areas, boat launching, lakes, riverside tracks
* Dog park
* Working farm - lease from CERA
* Family recreation
* Accessibility for locals, visitors and parking
* Generate more visitors - tourist, commercial and local shoppers
* Art - external display, installations, sculpture
* Memorial journey - income recycled to up keep "linear cemetery', ashes and plaques, trees in memorian
* Higher density housing, especially for younger owners and renters (to bring balanced life to town centre)
* Good views of river and town facilities
* Spaces and routes to be full of varied character
* Housing that makes walking to Kaiapoi
* Parking to make the CBD accessible
* Connecting existing walking with the CBD
* Weekend destination
* Movie theatre
Like the working farm idea very much.

I would endorse other peoples ideas about picnic areas etc I would also like to see a bmx track for the kids there is plenty of land between the town and ashkeaton where it would not impact upon residents I would also like the river walkway to link with beach rd walkway if some of the red zone streets are closed
Kaiapoi
World class sporting facilities attracting the top world class tornaments nurturing sport from ground roots.
Kaiapoi
Adventure playgroud with a fishing lake near it
An adventure playground would be amazing, sports ground, bike track and a movie theatre would be perfect. Not a lot for the local kids to do in Kaiapoi anymore.
Excellent Ideas Lane.

I live in the area and would like to see the area turned in to reserves and parks, my main concern is that I can still walk my dogs a long the river and surrounding area every morning as I have done for years now, so what ever happens it needs to be remembered that we live there still and appreciate the community environment, I wouldn't like to see sports grounds as Kaiapoi has enough of them already but I do think a Dog Park is a fantastic idea, all of Kaiapoi could benefit from it and a decent sized park for walking and recreation, our current Park is pretty small.

In my view best uses would include provisions for a number of popular sports, for example: rugby, league, soccer, cricket and tennis, also possibly a 9 or 18 hole golf course, outside pool or rowing course, bowling club, BMX track instead of overstocking existing residential parks such as Hinemoa Park
Kaiapoi
A stage so kapa haka, talent quests, carnival and stuff can perform. There is a removable marquee if it rains. It is waterproof. It will be better than grass.
That's me!!!!!!

A park/reserve would be a fitting memorial of what has been lost during the devastating earthquakes. It should be family-friendly with perhaps BBQ facilities and picnic tables.
As 2015 is the centenary of the Gallipoli landings, perhaps all (or part) of the park could be called the Gallipoli Memorial Park (or similar) with 28 oak trees planted commemorating the lives of the 28 local Kaiapoi servicement lost in WWI. It would remind us all not just of the loss incurred during the earthquakes but also the loss of life incurred during WWI, and all wars for that matter.
Retain as many of the existing trees/shrubs as possible as some of them take a long time to grow - it would be lovely for Kaiapoi people to recognise the Rhododendron or Camellia they had in their gardens - a fitting living memorial.
Pines / Kairaki Beaches
Parks for children and families.
Walkways with nice vegetation.
Maybe a sculpture park.
Maybe a skate park and muralled area.
Beautiful Picnic Park at Kairaki
Kaiapoi
Skateboard park for our young ones.
Less eatery places, already have 22+
Walkways - people.
Dog friendly walk ways/ park.
Playground for children.
Kaiapoi
Put the golf club there and the BMX track down at Pines beach and large playgrounds. Put houses on the golf course.
Kaiapoi
Don't build on it!
A BMX track would be sensible.
Kaiapoi
Native plantings
Parks and recreational areasa
Walking tracks
Cycling tracks
Healthy exercise happening
Oh yes a return to nature. The way it use to look along the river with flax and nature bush. Birds would be great!!! Clean the river and use it for recreation. It is very underutilised
