Canvas

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA) led a public engagement process called Canvas from July to September 2014. Over 300 people provided their ideas and comments during Canvas for the future use of the red zone land in Kaiapoi, Pines Beach and Kairaki. You can read more in the Canvas Summary Report (released in December 2014).

Here are the comments that were received during Canvas:

Kaiapoi

Pines / Kairaki Beaches

Kairaiki - Marina, wharf development for fishing etc

Kaiapoi

More phone booths, like 2 more phone booths

Kaiapoi

Green area with trees, shrubs, some wildflowers with paths for cycling and walking (dogs included) Also some open areas for space.
A place to reflect on why it's there but also to realise the benefits of green soaces and natural things.

Kaiapoi

1. Extend carpark behind the new library and shops between Hilton St and Raven Quay to as far as Flo. Barnard Courts to cater for future growth.
2. BMX track at end of Hilton St between Parish Lane and the NCF Reserve with parking to service track, park and those using the walking track.
3. A good dog park like Rolleston has.
4. Create a new golf course in Golden Groves area which could be exchanged for existing Golf Course which is on better land and could be used for future growth of Kaiapoi hence getting a return for Govt.

I would like to see a Canterbury Earthquake Memorial Park on the north side of Kaiapoi river. A cycle/walking trail with signs detailing the streets that were here, photos of the damage in Kaiapoi and the memorial letterbox sculpture etc. This would be a fitting tribute to what Kaiapoi went through, acknowledge the past and also create a beautiful park area for the future - this could include native bush elements, play equipment, sporting elements etc. It would also create a major attraction to bring more tourism dollars to Kaiapoi/Canterbury.

In the Courtney drive end, a proper covered bus terminal with a coffee machine and park n ride faciliies would be an excellent idea, particularly at the more industrial end.

What a great idea to the commemorate the old Kaiapoi and incorporate it with the new Kaiapoi with a garden with interpretation panels of our journey as a community. In time the memories of what was will fade and it would be nice to have an area dedicated to the old Kaiapoi and a trail with posts of what was along the way.

a park and ride is a great idea!

A Park 'n' Ride, what a great idea.

Part of the red zone at Raven Quay would be really useful for sheds associated with river uses eg: boat storage shed for the rowing club. Additional car parking in this area adjacent to the Library/service center car park would also benefit river users such as those using the rowing facility at Cure or kayakers and other passive river users.

Kaiapoi

Cass Street should be turned into a new subdivision as it's frequently used for those who want to use the boat ramp. Make that street look more inviting with new families and houses filling it!

Have we forgotten about the fact that we can remediate the land?

Kaiapoi

Kaiapoi

Some land in parks.
Some in playing fields.
Some in playgrounds for children.
Perhaps an outdoor entertainment area.

Kaiapoi

We would like to see the area made into parks for picnics and receation.

I would like to see a large area set aside for short term freedom camping for Certified self contained motorhomes and caravans. This would enabled more visitors to enjoy our recreational facilities and contribute to our local economy.

Kaiapoi

Streams formed for wild life, ducks, swans, birds etc. wooden bridges across the above - wide enough for wheelchairs and family buggies. I agree with lots of other suggestions from the public.

Kaiapoi

Make a bmx track and a skate park

Kaiapoi

I want to see the rowing/boat club used more often! Paddling round and around in a circle at Pegasus is getting quite…. boring.

I would like the Kaiapoi river to be cleaned up , more planting along side river bank where necessary, to enhance
area, making it more inviting for people to use small boats also, ie: kayaks / canoes too.

Kaiapoi

A dog park in Kaiapoi. It then leads onto the Pines/Kaiapoi walkway along the river.
Exercise parks with activities.

Kaiapoi

Walkways
Community gardens
Parks
Motor home park

Kaiapoi

I'd like to see the shared by different age groups. Picnic area with barbeque, coin operated mini golf. A place to gather to share and celebrate ie concerts, fun activities, mini golf area, tables, lighting, seating, an area for all ages and abilities are able to use. User friendly to disabled people. The area needs to be adaptable to future ideas. A flying fox. A climbing wall.

Kaiapoi

Agriculture- preferably market gardening. Ch-ch is or has lost much of its food production under housing. Invest the land ownershiip in the council and longterm lease the land for farming.

Kaiapoi

Kaiapoi red land:
The old Courtney Drive land should be the site of the golf course and the present golf course become housing and public open space.
