Canvas

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA) led a public engagement process called Canvas from July to September 2014. Over 300 people provided their ideas and comments during Canvas for the future use of the red zone land in Kaiapoi, Pines Beach and Kairaki. You can read more in the Canvas Summary Report (released in December 2014).

Here are the comments that were received during Canvas:

Pines / Kairaki Beaches

The Red Zone area at Pines and Kairaki Beach - this area could be called 'Rivertown Beach Reserve'.

I would like Kairaki to be the first 'freedom camping site' in New Zealand., close to the camping grounds with a toilet and rubbish bins. Showers available at camping site at a set price. It would promote Waimakariri and bring tourists in..

No freedom camping !! If they can afford to travel around in their campervans, they can afford to pay for that luxury. We want to keep this area unique.

Ditto!

As a resident of Kairaki I am not keen on random people camping next door. The WDC have invested a lot in the redeveloped camp ground. That's the place for camping.

Pines / Kairaki Beaches

A large area providing a mixture of camping facilities next to the beach for the recreational use of Cantabrians and also allowing Canterbury to benefit from the end of the tourist market (both domestic and international) who have less to spend on accommodation or want the traditional NZ experience . The camping ground facilities should provide a wide range of accommodation, eg. powered sites for caravans, tent sites and cabins of various sizes (for the many NZers who are not fortunate enough to be able to own their camping equipment and international backpackers), communal kitchen and bathroom facilities. It would be good to also have designated areas for freedom camping with a source of running water and self composting toilets. Also a facility for campers to properly discharge their waste from chemical toilets.

Kaiapoi

The river is the glue of Kaiapoi. It's the thing that brings people closer together. Fishing, The rowing club and the boat ramp near the end of Cass street are just many uses of the river.

Kaiapoi -kai means food and poi is a form of dance. Bringing markets and music back to the lifeless town is a brilliant way to get the community together.

We can have all these exaggerated ideas of what we want for the town but we need to focus on what we already have got.

Yes you can talk about, and write down words on paper......BORING!!!! Bring life to a town that has a passion for the communty through pictures.

Key point - Start building on what we already have.

I would like to see the red zone in Courtenay Drive zoned back into residential sections. Being a former resident I would love first choice to buy back my old section.

you would be building on lies and bullying

As one of the the Red Zoners in Courtenay, I would also like to be given first option to buy back a section. I miss that area of town.

I also agree. Parts of the red zones were relatively undamaged and are certainly suitable for residential use., even now. I too would like the option of buying back my land.

I agree. If at some time in the future, it is considered returning the areas adjacent to the river to Residential use, then the former owners should be given the option of buying back their sections.

85% of Kaiapoi North Red Zone suffered minor to moderate land damage.... the least of any red zone...
I believe legislation dictates that Crown owned land that is not wanted is offered firstly to govt departments, then to Ngai Tahu...
If the land was compulsory acquired then there was the option within CERA legislation for the Red Zone residents to be offered the land first...but it was a voluntary offer.. so will not apply

Kaiapoi

World class sporting facilities attracting the top world class tournaments. Nurturing sport from ground roots.

Kaiapoi

Stands of native trees to attract native birds. Would be great to have pest free fences or local people dealing with pests that endanger native birds. Wet lands could be a part of this also. allow local communities to be involved in planting and developing these areas.

Kaiapoi

A public park which incorporates a dog-park like the one at The Groynes with separated areas, walks, trees and water areas - all fenced off. A picnic area too.

In the picnic area, have built in BBQ's that you put money into a slot.
What about a go-cart track
climbing apparatus.

Ideas from 13 August Community Workshop:

* Amphitheatre/ events venue "big"
* Sculpture parks
* Fitness trail
* Be sure to consider access to the river for fishing spots eg Maori Dam
* Keep the boat ramp at Askeaton where it is now!

I am so happy to have this opportunity to express something I have wanted to express for a long long time!

Waimakariri Needs a “ PARK AND RIDE”

As a resident from this area, (and previously) the city I definitely see a need for people who work out of the area, and have a place that is SAFE, and FREE to park their cars, and meet others that may be going their way.

In the States, (California where I lived) we had places called PARK AND RIDE, where we could meet and PARK one of the cars, and RIDE with the other person to where ever they wanted to go.

It was well lit and concrete areas. And we never worried about our cars being tampered with.

And it was FREE!

YOU can truly see all the benefits here! Less people on the road, cheaper for the people as they can share the gas expenses are jut a few reasons PARK AND RIDE WORK!!

Sincerely,

Kathy

Cool idea! I looked up the concept and found this image of a Park and Ride location in the States. A small area like this could well in Kaiapoi if there is a need. http://www.valleymetro.org/park_and_rides/mlr

I think the red zone area closest to the town centre could become a market garden, allotment style area that features a farmers market every weekend. The high school's horticultural class could have an area and use it to teach the next generation how to grow veges, I think that is becoming a lost art.
There is enough space here that the to have a community asset that gives back to the residents and helps to educate the youth. Thank you for the opportunity to have my say.

Excellent idea!
