For the land to be turned back into farmland as there has been so much good farm land turned into silly subdivisions, you just can't leep taking you have to give back

I agree - our red zoned area in Burwood was originally market gardens and farmland. The land was less damaged than some other red zone areas and the soil is still rich and productive. Turning it back to market gardens and farmland would be an excellent use of the land - especially as poverty has risen in some areas of east Christchurch, and other areas that were previously farm land are now being developed for residential use. This may be even more the case in the Waimak red zones.

Pines / Kairaki Beaches

This submission is regarding Pines Beach & Kairaki. Rather than having vacant land reverting to weeds or even grassed areas, I would like to see it planted with trees and shrubs and winding paths built through it.

The paths should not be sealed but left with a firm surface to enables walkers, joggers & MTBs to use them. This would give residents (especially women) a safer area to walk than through the adjacent pine forests or the beach.

In the future housing erodes the surrounding rural landscape, these areas may as well be of benefit as green spaces to enjoy. The residents in these areas have chosen to reside here because they don't want to be in crowded areas, this proposal will ensure that the areas character is preserved.

It would be good for the community if the red zone lands be re-constructed and rebuilt on. There is too much area not to be used up.

Pines / Kairaki Beaches

(In 15 years' time )Pines/Kairaki is known worldwide for its proliferation of food and flower gardens connected by walking tracks and sheltered seating areas. This area is famous as a community-led project following on from a major disaster (earthquake)and turning this adverse event into something positive and healing. Initiated by green zone neighbours offering to adopt red zoned land adjacent to their properties, but still clearly in public ownership, the project was then opened to other interested groups and individuals to expand the gardens and orchards. As custodians and leaders, the green zoners applied for community funding and set up their gardens which then were used as teaching resources and sources of seeds and cuttings for other gardens. Donations of materials and expertise were used to improve the sandy compacted soils till they became highly productive, feeding and rewarding the community and inspiring others.

I like your vision. The one thing I would change is that I think the red zone land should first be adopted by its former owners, but if it is too painful for them to accept that role, or they are not physically able to do so because, for example, they have moved away, then I know they would be grateful if their former green zone neighbours were willing to take on the task.

Walking/cycling tracks linking up to Pegasus Bay walkway and enhancement (eg. sign-posting) to guide along the track to the beaches and stop off points along the way. Existing red-zone trees could be incorporated into the tracks.
