Introduction to Canvas - Your thinking for the red zone - Mayor Ayers of Wamakariri District - Watch Video

Mayor Ayers of Waimakariri District introduces Canvas - Your thinking for the red zone. Canvas is the public engagement campaign to determine the future use ...

And I have now been reliably informed that north of the river, 6 households are remaining in the Red Zone, and south of the river, there are 5. These families would not have made their decisions lightly. And we all know that there are many more red-zoned sections in Kaiapoi that should never have been zoned thus, and could be suitable for future residential use. Let's not get too carried away with our ideas until the possible future use for these as Residential has been properly examined.

Nancy

It is excellent to see the CanvasKaiapoi initiative has taken off with many contributions of ideas for the future of the Red Zone. There is however one thing which should influence our ideas. We need to be made aware of the location and the numbers of households who have declined CERA's offer and chosen to remain in the Red Zone. Their properties are still residential, and this must surely always be remembered and respected in the planning of any future developments.

Nancy

As the majority of people have now moved from the red zone there should not be any more WDC rates used to upkeep the amenities for the few that CHOSE not to leave. This was made clear when the red zone was created - If they decide to stay then user pays !

Build a road for the landlocked residents so they can travel to and from their homes safely.

I wholeheartedly support Nancy's vision, particularly for those whose red zoned land sustained little or no damage and could be used again for residential development with little or no remediation.

Lin

This is an interesting idea, our recommendation is that you post this as an idea under 'Your vision for Kaiapoi'.

It would be my wish, should it transpire some time in the future, that the red zone adjacent to the river is ever considered again for residential development, that the former owners of these properties are the first people to be given the opportunity of purchasing back their sections.

Nancy

I would like to see the document that says, Users Pays if you stay in the Red Zone. The above writer clearly does not understand the Red Zoning. Has anyone got the TRUE cost for amenities for those still living in the Red Zone? The Red Zone land they are looking for ideas for is Crown owned Land not privately owned land. CERA once again are misleading people to make them look like that they care about them. The crown have always intended to sell the land to Ngai Tahu, for them to redevelop.

Kaiapoi as a river town needs to keep the Askeaton boat ramp open and acessible as it is the only low tide ramp in Kaiapoi. Bigger powerboats are unable to be retrieved at low tide anywhere else and it is used 24/7. In the longer term it would be ideal to build up the boat ramp car park using some of the landfill that seems to be being dug up all around the District. There are two other advantages, first it is clear of the Cure Boating Club rowing activities and second it avoids a long drag by boaties along the Kaiapoi River to Cintoshes Hole, The Brooklands Lagoon and the lower Waimakariri River area.

Agree keep the boat ramp at Askeaton. plenty of parking here. have counted up to 30 cars and trailers at Askeaton during the salmon season. whole area should repaired for use

Another big park with play equipment

Pines / Kairaki Beaches

Community gardens
We are developing a model for an “allotment” type scheme. Providing garden areas for people with small sections from the Kaiapoi area as well as the camp.

Another proposal is for a Mobile cafe area at Kairaki Beach, this involves the development of a gravel area for a mobile coffee, cafe operator with room for parking, and chairs and table. Potential customers would be whitebait and salmon fisherman as well as campers, weekend boaters
and beach users.

Other ideas include a canoe hire facility and a boat storage area developed at Kairaki Beach including covered boat sheds and a boat wash
down area with a visually suitable fenced gravelled lockup area.

The development of an outdoor entertainment adventure area at Pines Beach including mini golf, obstacle course, flying fox, giant slide, maze, and adult exercise.

i would like to see the Courtenay downs area deveoped into a park with grass, tree s etc. I do not want any more noisy activities in this area as I live there and we already have noise from the timber factory and Woodford Glen. However, I would not object to a children's play area.Walkways and cycle tracks please and lots of trees.

When we were children (40 yrs ago, but only seems like the other day) growing up, our parents owned a holiday home in Pines Beach. We had 20 years of wonderful times holidaying there, regularly. We now have grandchildren & we would love to see Pines Beach & Kairaki Beach brought back to life like it was back then with Galas each year, childrens playgrounds, picnic spots, mobile cafe!. Please help & let's bring back LIFE into these 2 very special permanent & holiday home areas.

Judy

I like the comment about an allotment area for people with small sections from the Kaiapoi area "as well as the camp". I have friends from the Christchurch red zone now living in a holiday park in the area ("the camp?), who know they will never own another property. An allotment would be a nice idea for people in their circumstances, to give them back a tiny bit of what they once had.

I would like to see a high quality nature area set up for disabled people to 'walk' enjoy nature and include a fitness/exercise course for them. This would also appeal to elderly - a much neglected people when such areas are set up.

Brilliant idea

More cafes for weekend visitors
Fish boating etc.

Japanese garden with little bridges and cherry blosson trees.

Kaiapoi

Reserves, walkways, cycleways, club activity areas, nature and farming.
I do concede these changes have a major cost. As a rate and tax payer I think it will be worth the progress.

Kaiapoi

I would love to see lots of green spaces. We often leave Kaiapoi to go for a walk or bike ride or a family picnic. It would be great to have more of those opportunities here in Kaiapoi. Even places just to sit and have a takeaway coffee during the weekday.

Kaiapoi

I would like to see a stable in Kaiapoi so we don't have to go into town.
